Rory Glennie, “Ghillie”, one of the founding members of the Comox Valley Fly Fishing club, has agreed to provide us with a number of articles based on his over forty-five years of fly fishing experience on Vancouver Island.
Both a saltwater fishing guide and a licenced British Columbia Freshwater Angling Guide, Rory’s outstanding skill as an angler has been widely recognized. He was a member of “Fly Fishing Team Canada” at two World Fly Fishing Championships, three time “1st.” winner in monthly fly tying contests at “Fly Fishing the West” magazine and was the recipient of the 1992 Fisheries and Oceans “National Recreational Fisheries Award”; the Jack Hames “Award of Merit” from SSBC, Comox Valley Chapter; and three time recipient “Member of the Year Award” from Comox Valley Fly Fishers.
Rory has devoted considerable time and energy to furthering fishing and fish conservation in British Columbia. He spent five years conducting a fisheries research project on Coho interception for the University of British Columbia; served three terms as Chairman of the Steelhead Society of BC, Comox Valley Chapter; was on the Executive Board of SSBC for three years; served two terms as President of SSBC; two years as Executive Board member for Haig-Brown Kingfisher Creek Society; and eight terms as President of Haig-Brown Kingfisher Creek Society.
He is has also been a feature writer and West Coast Editor for The Canadian Fly Fisher magazine, and a feature writer, columnist and editorial staffer for The Island Fisherman Magazine. He is an award winning non-fiction writer with The Outdoor Writers of Canada organization, a book author and contributor to five published books and several magazines/newspapers.
He has been a featured fly fishing guide for episodes on three different B.C. based TV shows, a guest speaker for several Vancouver Island conservation/fishing clubs and a fly fishing presenter at several trade shows in Canada and the U.S.
