One is never alone on Spider

One is never alone on Spider

Angus here to answer the question. “Are you ever alone on Spider Lake?” Short and sweet…no! Note: the panoramic photo above shows the view I had this morning. Not a soul on Spider. Was I lonely? No. Was I alone? I thought so until the breakfast bell rang on a rolled muddler. Low and behold, I suddenly was the centre of attention! It was 6:45 and the gravel pit had not started breaking the silence. The BSL was flat with not a hint of a breeze. As soon as that first fish broke the surface Arthur (had to be) came in for a swoop or 2 then went and sulked in his tree on cottage row. Well he was out of luck. The next hit brought the Lady to tandom rush me as well. Sure I was alone on the lake but is this alone? No is the answer.

By 9am I was joined by another fellow in a “zodiac-like” boat. Thanks for splitting the pressure from the Nigel’s Crew, I thought.. He left after a couple of spins around, mumbling something like: “they sure are agressive!” Sullen was his tone. I had 2 in the boat and brought to hand a couple more. About 11 I looked to notice a weird cloud just hanging over the north end of cottage row. l look closely at this shape and realized; there is a great white shark hovering over the lake. That explains everything!

Truely odd that tiny, barely there cloud didn’t really dissipate or move. Oh, oh it’s noon and the coyyucks are showing up. Time to leave when the best fish hit Angz Beauty. Tag team at its best from the Crew. The Lady really works it. Arthur make a half effort then as usual leaves and perches. A fat 15 took a long time to get in the net and aboard. Time to go home.

Angus out.

A great morning> hot and calm lots of action from the depths and from the sky and no you are never alone on BSL.

Strange lights over Denman and the Devil Birds of Spider

Strange lights over Denman and the Devil Birds of Spider

Dear CVFFrs:

Star date: May 19 2017.

Destination: B.S.L.

“Red sky in the morning…sailors warning!”. What about Red beams over Denman…Look out for the Devil Birds on Spider? A rare sighting of red beams over Denman on the road to Spider around 6:00 am. Hmmm. It was a glorious morning: then this sight below.

Carry on carrying on. I arrived @ BSL around 6:20 am. Great conditions> no wind, overcast and warmish. Got to Cottage Row about 6:35 to find only one other fisher on the water heading to the NW bay.

Got a few hits on my floating setup (Rolled Muddler) and one good hit and a miss on Angz Beauty. With this little bit of action the Devil bird (Arthur) scooted over to keep an eye on moi. I wish Nigel would tell his gang to stick to the NW bay. So I presume there was no action over there cause Arthur was soon joined by Lady! Arthur made a few lazy swoops and went back to roost on his perch in Cottage Row.

The Rolled Muddler kept getting hits. LLRs and SLRs every 15 mins. or so, that’s when Angz Beauty took over bringing a 14+ and a good 13 to the boat. The last fish (14+) was part of a double header with the 14 leaping over the floater to create a real cluster#$$%^^ while being bombed by Nigel’s Crew right @ Cottage Row. After a great deal of fiddling I was able to sneak my 14+ into my net whilst being swooped. Another fisher in a canoe gliding by said he lost his best fish ever on Spider earlier to the Devil (probably Lady cause she is good). I have now developed a new fly after seeing what my R.M. looked like @ the end of the morning I present the Roiled Muddler

A bare hook, loose deer head and mallard askew. Still a killer!

Got off the water about 12 and headed home. Did not feed Nigel’s Crew this time either! Knock on wood. A full morning for sure with a tasty supper after.

Keep your eyes skywards. You never know when the devils will swoop.

Ang out.

P.S. I can say the NW bay must have not been fishing well for the Lady and her squeeze (why?) never left the main lake…lucky me and others fishing there.
