Very durable and super simple to tie, the ERC is very effective for bringing a trout to the surface.
Hook – #12, Mustad 94840 or equivalent, de-barbed and sharpened.
Thread – Uni-thread, Fluorescent chartreuse or black or bright orange.
Tail – Natural coloured deer body hair.
Wing – Natural coloured deer body hair.
Ultra simple; Tying thread is used for binding down the deer hair and for making the body. Use clear head cement/lacquer over thread body to reinforce against abrasion.
A bit of hair-end stubble at the head aids in securing the wing.
Treat deer hair with dry fly dressing to aid in long lasting floatation.
The rear facing deer body hair is very durable due to its springiness and ability to return to original form without breaking-off the individual hairs.
Black body throughout the season for all trout species. Fluorescent chartreuse body for Rainbow trout. Bright orange body for Cutthroat trout.
This pattern works well both as a floating surface fly and while awash in the surface film as a drowned, helpless insect.
Only one size, #12, is required to mimic a host of bugs and to provide enough gape for a solid hook-set in the fish’s jaw.

Another trout falls for the ERC.
